The Department of History at Sam Houston State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in the history of East Asia, to begin Fall 2021. Chronological and geographical specializations are open, though we are especially interested in candidates with expertise in China and/or Japan, and whose research and teaching incorporate cross-cultural, transnational, and/or comparative approaches. Teaching responsibilities include courses in Asian history at the upper division and graduate levels, and a world history survey at the undergraduate level. We strongly prefer candidates with a Ph.D. in History, or closely related field, and proficiency in their relevant research language(s).

ABD candidates may apply; however, the Ph.D. must be completed before the start of the appointment. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sam Houston State University is strongly committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace that empowers all employees to reach their full potential. All members of the academic community share a responsibility for developing and maintaining an environment in which differences are valued and inclusiveness is practiced. The college welcomes applications from those who will contribute to the diversity of our community.
To apply, upload to http://shsu.peopleadmin.com/postings/25334 a letter of application, addressed to Dr. Uzma Quraishi, Chair of the History of East Asia Search Committee; a curriculum vitae; unofficial graduate transcripts (official transcripts of all post-secondary education will be required of all finalists prior to on-campus interviews); a diversity and inclusion statement, specifically addressing your qualifications and strategy for engaging all students at SHSU; a writing sample of chapter length; two sample syllabi (one upper-division undergraduate course and one graduate course, both in the History of East Asia); and three letters of recommendation. If a candidate has not completed the doctorate, one letter must be from the candidate’s advisor, addressing the state of the dissertation. Review of applications will begin on January 4, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.
