Otani University is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Managing Editor of the Eastern Buddhist Society within the Shin Buddhist Comprehensive Research Institute’s International Buddhist Studies Project, starting from June 1, 2017. The Eastern Buddhist Society has, since its foundation in 1921 by Suzuki Daisetsu, Sasaki Gesshō, Akanuma Chizen, and others, contributed to research on Buddhism through the publication of an English-language academic journal devoted to Buddhist studies.

            The position entails management of the creation of the journal at all levels of the production process, from the peer review of submissions, through the copy-editing and proofreading of manuscripts, to the printing of the journal, in cooperation with the General Editor and the Editorial Committee.

Qualifications:

(1) A Masters Degree in Buddhist studies or a related field completed on or before June 1, 2017

(2) Native-level proficiency in English

(3) Excellent academic writing skills and experience with editing and proofreading academic work

(4) Excellent managerial and administrative, and time management skills

(5) Familiarity with the conventions in the Chicago Manual of Style

(3) A description of the applicant’s research interests (please use the format provided, using English is acceptable)

(5) Certification of the completion of a Masters Degree.

For those holding a PhD (or expecting to receive one), please provide certification of completion of that degree (or certification of the expectation of completion).

(For those who have left a PhD program after completing the course work, please provide certification of having completed the course work, or similar materials.)

(6) Copies of the off-prints of English-language academic articles by the applicant or an English-language academic writing sample. (Please provide three recent works. Unpublished papers are also acceptable if published ones are not available.)

(7) Two letters of recommendation (preferably including one by the applicant’s academic advisor)

 

Selection process:

The application materials will be reviewed by a selection committee and interviews will be held at Otani University in Kyoto in early April. Applicants will be informed of the decision of the selection committee in late April.
