Kyushu University’s International Master and Doctorate Program (IMAP / IDOC), with generous funding from Getty through its Connecting Art Histories initiative, invites proposals for the project:

 “Shared Coasts, Divided Historiographies:

   Mobilizing People, Ideas, and Artifacts in the East Asian Mediterranean”

This project aims to bring together the next generation of art historians from the “East Asian Mediterranean”—here conceived as a geographic, historical, and cultural space of connections centering on the regions of Kyushu, Okinawa, Taiwan, and South Korea. We will explore exchanges of people, ideas, and artifacts in this geographical region during two historical periods, the First (1500–1850) and Second (1850–1945) Global Ages, respectively. We will revisit a history of continuous interaction, exchange, and transculturation in the fields of art, historiography, and visual and material culture.

The project will bring together about 15 junior academics for a period of two-years, beginning in the fall of 2023. We will hold a series of lectures and reading workshops, embark on two travel seminars in the region of the “East Asian Mediterranean,” and build a digital mapping platform.

The lectures and reading workshops will be held in a hybrid format: in person at Kyushu University and online. The travel seminars will be held in person. Each of the two travel seminars lasts for about one week. The first will be headed for Kyushu and South Korea in May of 2024. The second travel seminar will visit Okinawa and Taiwan in June of 2025. During the travel seminars, we will explore sites, visit collections, engage with practitioner communities, and connect with institutions. In doing so we will build a lasting network that stimulates discussions, broadens our perspectives, and creates future opportunities.

We seek proposals from junior academics (as defined by the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, JSPS: either age 39 or under, or less than 8 years after Ph.D. acquisition) with a relevant specialization. The project will focus on the abovementioned countries and regions of Japan, South Korea, Okinawa, and Taiwan. Outstanding proposals from other countries or specializations will be considered.

Successful applicants are expected to attend both travel seminars in person as well as participate in the series of lectures and workshop (in person or online). Participants should be fluent in English and one of the following languages: Japanese, Korean, or Chinese.

Simultaneous translation services will only be selectively available for key events.

Expenses for transportation, accommodation, and selected meals during the travel seminar will be covered. (Other necessary financial and administrative support may be provided case by case).

To apply, please send a current CV and a Research Proposal (about 1000-1500 words, in English). The research proposal should:

• Introduce your current and previous research. Ideally, provide information on your achievements such as a PhD dissertation, lectures, or publications and clarify how your work relates to the theme of our project.
• Explain how the travel seminars and other group activities will enhance your ability to conduct meaningful research and create opportunities for cooperations or on-site activities. Be as specific as possible.
• Suggest possible readings for discussion by all project participants at workshops.
• Suggest three scholars with relevant experience (academics, curators, artists, etc.) that you would to like us to invite for the lecture series.
