Assistant Professor of Japanese (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Asian Languages and Literatures and the Asian Studies program at Carleton College invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Japanese, to begin September 1, 2023. This is a full-time position, with a joint appointment of 80% in the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures and 20% in the Asian Studies program.

We seek candidates who can teach Japanese-language courses at all levels, and are passionate about teaching in a liberal arts setting. The position will involve teaching in both the Japanese language sequence as well as teaching courses about Japanese culture in English. Native or near-native fluency in both Japanese and English is required.

The candidate will have a Ph.D. completed or substantially completed in Japanese Studies at the time of application, and must have had experience in teaching Japanese-language courses at the college level. Field of specialization is open, but the successful candidate will bring expertise that will expand interdisciplinary offerings at the college and attract students from outside Japanese Studies. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a willingness to participate actively in the life of the department and the Asian Studies program, and to contribute to extra-curricular and service activities. Teaching load is five courses per year. The Carleton calendar includes three 10-week terms.
