A note on the project:
From its founding in 1867, the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zurich has been famous for its high-caliber collection of old masters, such as Dürer, Rembrandt, and Goya. In 1904, these works were joined by works by Hiroshige, Shun'ei, Sharaku, Hokusai, and many other Japanese masters, bought in the Paris auction of the famous print collector Charles Gillot (1853-1903). This fine East Asian collection was, however, entirely forgotten for over a century.
In 2020, the collection was discovered by a research group from the University of Zurich, who found the works, including botanical drawings, as well as numerous woodblock printed books. The discovery resulted in a collaboration between the University of Zurich and the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zurich and its curator Dr. Susanne Pollack. The remarkable East Asian collection will be shown to the public for the very first time in an exhibition starting on August 17, 2022. The results of the research for the exhibition will also be recorded in a publication that will be available by the time of the opening of the exhibition.
The project has been made possible by a generous grant from the Ishibashi Foundation. Additional support was given by the Japan Foundation, the Swiss-Japanese Chamber of Commerce, the Swiss-Japanese Society, The National Museum of Japanese History, and the Dr. Wilhelm Jerg-Legat of the University of Zurich.
