We are seeking a third paper for a panel on the theme of "Building and Using Corporate Goodwill" for the 2021 Business History Conference, to be held in March 2021 (Detroit, MI).
This panel will examine the cultural and political importance of corporate goodwill from roughly 1870 through the 1960s. One panelist proposes to examine the venues for building goodwill with the public in the Gilded Age United States, focusing primarily on advertising and brand characters as modes of communicating with and building relationships to the public. Another panelist will discuss the ways in which companies leveraged corporate goodwill for political ends in the postwar period, turning to interactions between the British Foreign Office and the oil companies BP and Shell. We seek a third panelist working on the topic of corporate goodwill, preferably on the interim period between 1880 and 1950, which will complement these other perspectives.
