LSU Press’s new Southern Food and Beverage Museum Series on the Culture of Food and Drink is currently inviting proposals for book projects on the study of the food and drink of the American South, broadly defined. This new book series will publish books for general readers that explore the techniques, traditions, and histories of southern food, along with the people who create and perpetuate them.

We are eager to showcase the many facets of Southern food and drink, with an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates food studies, history, geography, anthropology, cultural history, sociology, and more. Grounded in robust research, peer-reviewed, and accessible to a wide reading audience, these books will celebrate the diverse and ever-changing food stories that have shaped the South and the nation.

POTENTIAL TOPICS

  • Biographies of major figures in southern food and drink
  • Foodways of the peoples and communities of the South
  • Books on specific crops, foods and drinks, cooking methods, food growing and foraging methods, or other culturally special aspects of southern food and drink
  • Books that explore the influence of southern food and drink on national and international culinary trends and culture
  • Books on the food and drink histories of southern events and places
  • Books about the connection between southern food and drink and southern culture

Contributions from BIPOC, disabled, first-gen, and queer scholars are particularly welcome. If you’re not sure a project would be a good fit for the series, feel free to inquire!

Please send submissions for the series by email to LSU Press acquisitions editor Jenny Keegan: jenniferkeegan@lsu.edu. Your proposal should include:

  •     Brief (1-2 page) description of the project

  •     Information about your intended audience, including some comparable recent titles on similar topics
  •     Estimated word count and number of illustrations
