Dear H-SHGAPE Subscribers,

SHGAPE is searching for a new editor for the Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era.

The Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era (SHGAPE) is issuing a call for proposals to edit its flagship publication, The Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. The new editor will succeed Rosanne Currarino of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. The term of appointment, which will begin in August 2023, will extend for five years and may be renewed. The first year of the appointment will overlap with the current editor’s final year in order to ensure a smooth transition. The editor is supported by a book review editor, an on-line editor, and an editorial board representative of a broad range of methodologies and areas of specialization.  The position requires support from the editor’s home institution, which generally includes course release time and some level of administrative assistance.

The Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era is a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal published quarterly by Cambridge University Press. It publishes original essays, historiographic overviews, forums, and reviews of scholarly books on all aspects of U.S. history for the time period from 1865 through the 1920s.  For additional information, please see

Applicants should submit the following to Amy Wood at

  • A C.V.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A proposal (5 pp. maximum) that assesses the JGAPE as it now stands, offers a vision for the journal as it evolves, and specifies the level of support your institution is likely to offer.

Prospective applicants should feel free to consult with members of the committee. The search committee hopes to meet with finalists at the OAH annual meeting in April 2023.
