SHGAPE Research Grant: Call for submissions

The Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era  (SHGAPE) announces a grant of up to $1,500 to be awarded to a single recipient to support research on any topic concerning US history between 1865 and the 1920s.  Eligibility is limited to advanced doctoral students, independent scholars, and contingent faculty who are members of SHGAPE.  The recipient will be notified in December 2022 and the funds may be used any time between January 2023 and January 2024 for expenses related to furthering research in progress.  SHGAPE endorses the American Historical Association’s capacious definition of research expenses. 

The recipient will be selected by the SHGAPE Programming Committee on the basis of originality, historical significance, and feasibility of the applicant’s research plan.  They will receive a ticket to the SHGAPE luncheon at the 2023 meeting of the Organization of American Historians, where the award will be presented.  The recipient will also give a virtual public talk about their research.  The deadline for submissions is October 31, 2022.

Applicants should submit the following materials to SHGAPE Programming Committee chair, Wendy Gamber, at

  • Name, contact information and the title of the project.
  • A brief c.v. (5 pages maximum)
  • A proposal of no more than 750 words using these subheadings:  (1) Description of project; (2) Significance of project for scholarship on the Gilded Age and/or Progressive Era (broadly defined); and (3) Work plan and timeline for grant.
  • An estimated budget.
  • Graduate students must submit a letter from their advisor confirming Ph.D. candidacy/ABD status.
  • All required application material should be sent as a single PDF document, if possible.
