How to Respond to (or Create) a Discussion Post On H-World

In an effort to make the transition from “H-World the email List-Server” to “H-World the Drupel based multimedia site” as seamless as possible default settings were used that would continue to send each message to subscribers email accounts just like we always have. However, although those email messages look very similar to “The Old H-World”, there is one key difference. Email messages from “The New H-World” are "Read Only".  Subscribers cannot respond to a discussion post via email

The “New H-World” platform is designed to function like a social media site. The idea behind the new platform is for subscribers to bookmark H-World and make a visit to the website (https://networks.h-net.org/h-world) as part of their daily scholarly habit. The editors were skeptical that H-World subscribers would do so, at least at first when very little multi-media content has been produced, and thus the current default setting allowing subscribers to monitor H-World via email. However, if you wish to respond to a H-World posting (or create a new discussion topic) you must go to the H-World Website.

To create a new discussion.

  • Go to the H-World Website at (https://networks.h-net.org/h-world)
  • Make sure that you are logged in.
    • Look at the top right hand corner above the large H-World banner. If it reads “My Profile” you are logged in. If it reads “Login” click it and login.
      • After Login you may need to return to the H-World site. The simplest thing is to bookmark it. But you can also access it through your H-Net profile.
  • Once you are on the H-World site and logged in click on the orange button labeled “Start a Discussion with fellow scholars” located underneath the “R” of the H-World banner at the top of the page.
  • Fill in the fields, including your discussion posting (as well as required keyword for the search engine).
  • Click “Submit to Editor” button near bottom of frame.

      • After Login you may need to return to the H-World site. The simplest thing is to bookmark it . But you can also access it through your H-Net profile.
  • If the posting you wish to respond to is not on the “Home” page, select the “Discussions” tab underneath the “H” in the large H-World banner and locate the posting.
  • Select the “Replies” button at the bottom of the posting and construct your reply.
  • Click the “Submit to Editor” button

Also, you can go straight to the discussion posting by clicking on the linkable subject line in your email notification of the discussion posting. The process is simpler than it sounds above. But it does require subscribers to go to the H-World website to respond to/construct postings. Feel free to practice a reply on this message.

We know some subscribers are having trouble with the new format and we want to help everyone get onboard with the new platform which provides the opportunity for H-World to grow technologically and yet to continue functioning as a central location for scholars and practioners of world history to network with one another and discuss the issues of the field around the clock, seven days a week. This has been a H-World’s primary mission for the last 21 years. Over the course of that time the internet has changed and H-World has changed with it.

We look forward to both reviving our tradition of intellectually stimulating virtual discussion as well as seeing what the those involved with the field of World History decides to create with our new multi-media capabilities.
