The Routledge Handbook of Medieval Military Strategy

Editors: Daniel P. Franke and John D. Hosler

This volume is a massive, globally-focused treatment of the neglected subject of medieval strategy. Its 38 chapters will cover Western Europe, Byzantium, the Near East, Central, South, and East Asia, north and sub-Saharan Africa, and the Western Hemisphere from the 4th to 16th centuries. They examine strategy through a wide aperture: strategic and technical literature, land and sea strategies, regular and irregular warfare, and theoretical and applied military strategy. Already under contract, its publication is expected in 2024.

The editors are still seeking authors for the following chapters (6,000 words, including notes):

China: Sui and Tang Dynasties
Ottomans: Mehmed the Conqueror
Ottomans: Suleiman the Magnificent

Interested authors should send 100-word abstracts to john.hosler@gmail.com by June 17, 2022. Chapter submissions are due March 1, 2023.
