Call for Book Chapters on Authoritarian Regimes and the Environmental History of Asia
Call for Book Chapters on Authoritarian Regimes and the Environmental History of Asia
On 27-28 April 2017 the Aleksanteri Institute (the Finnish Centre of Russian and East European Studies) at the University of Helsinki held a workshop on the interdisciplinary study of authoritarian systems and the environment. The focus of this event was to identify, whether there is a certain, distinguished way how authoritarian regimes relate to the natural environment? How they respond to environmental challenges, why they tackle certain environmental problems and how they tend to lean toward certain solutions to those environmental problems.
Currently there is edited volumes under preparation to be published with a major international academic publisher in 2018/19. Two edited volumes based on the papers presented in this workshop are edited by Viktor Pál (University of Helsinki) and Stephen Brain (Mississippi State University). The thematic scopes of these two volumes are:
1. relationship between economic policy, technology, innovation and the natural environment under authoritarian and totalitarian systems, and
2. the relationship between environmental ideology, state environmental propaganda, environmental policy, environmental movements, environmental discourses and authoritarian/totalitarian systems.
Confirmed contributors include several accomplished international scholars and tentative chapters cover the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
We are now inviting submissions for both edited volumes about the Asian continent, geographically interpreted, to have complete global coverage.
Authors should send their abstracts by September 1, 2017 to: viktor(dot)paal(at)gmail(dot)com
With queries please contact editors via the same e-mail address.
Selected authors should be able to submit draft papers by October 1, 2017 and finalized papers by January 15, 2018.
