CALL FOR PAPERS

Panels on “Emigration and Immigration in Austrian and Germany Culture” (GSA)
September 15-18, 2022
Houston, TX

Emigration and Immigration are important tropes in Austrian and German Culture. Certainly, emigration from both countries played a culturally significant role in resisting and surviving National Socialism in the first half of the twentieth century. Since the 1950s, immigration into Germany and Austria have contributed to new and diverse cultural productions that have enriched German-language culture, and contributed to a better understanding of the cultural diversity of German-language countries. This panel series will explore both phenomena of emigration and immigration and seek to also articulate connections between both.

Papers on this panel may address any of the following topics:

  • Literary and autobiographical texts by emigrés from Austria and Germany
  • Literary and cultural productions by authors and artists with a migratory background in Austria and/or Germany
  • Cultural intersections between both phenomena of emigration and immigration within the context of German-language countries
