FEATURED JOB: Historic New England, Visitor Experience - Indigenous Community Liaison and Researcher

Historic New England is seeking applicants for two, part-time Indigenous Community Liaison/Researcher openings to support our Recovering New England’s Voices initiative. Each will be responsible for one region in New England, the north or the south, but will work as a team to achieve the goals for this position. This position is 10-20 hours a week with a flexible schedule at the rate of $30 per hour and are term limited for 12 months.

This is a new position, and we are seeking candidates from all fields of work who are creative, enjoy community outreach, and have a desire to contribute to better representation of Indigenous peoples in the museum and public history spheres.

The team will act as a representative of Historic New England to initiate new and build upon already established relationships with Indigenous groups, communities, organizations, and individuals throughout New England with the goal of partnership and coalition building. They will also work to help staff with historical research and the integration of Indigenous stories into our tours, programs, and interpretation at our historic house museums.

Ideal candidates are part of or have connections to Indigenous and Native American communities in the New England area and are enthusiastic about inclusion, diversity, equity, and social justice.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct primary and secondary research from relevant sources to deepen and broaden our knowledge of the topics, subjects, and stories of Indigenous people, particularly as they relate to Historic New England sites
• Collaborate with the other researchers and staff to incorporate the research products into transformative experiences at our sites
• Initiate new and build upon already established relationships with Indigenous groups, communities, organizations, and individuals throughout New England with the goal of partnership and coalition building
• Offer insights and make recommendations to support Historic New England in its goal to become a better ally to Indigenous communities
• Participate in and contribute to Historic New England’s culture through staff training, blogs and vlogs, and public programs

Qualifications:

• Experience working with historical research, particularly with Indigenous and Native American history
• Experience working with partnership and coalition building with the goals of inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and social justice
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Valid driver’s license and means of transportation are required. Ability to travel to our collections and archives offices as well as any libraries, archives, and research sites throughout the region
