The National Fellowship Program supports outstanding scholars who are completing dissertations in United States politics, with an emphasis on historical and institutional analyses of politics, law, public policy, and international relations (including international law). Special consideration will be given this year to applicants working on problems pertaining to democratic crisis in the legal and/or international history of the United States. National Fellows have the opportunity to connect with and be a part of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation’s interdisciplinary community of world-class Scholars and Fellows at the University of Virginia.

The Program funds up to four National Fellows per year to support dissertation research and writing, awarding each Fellow a stipend of $30,000 in their first year, and $30,000 should they qualify for a second year. The Foundation assists Fellows in choosing a senior scholar from their field to serve as a mentor and supports them in assembling collaborative research networks focused on their areas of expertise. National Fellows are expected to complete at least one extended (ca. 10-day) visit each year at the Foundation in Charlottesville where they are provided with training in skills relevant to leadership in academic research and institutions of higher education and policy-making. Residency at the University of Virginia is not required as part of the Fellowship, though Fellows are welcome to consider the option.

The deadline for completed applications is February 1, 2023.  For more information and access to the online application, please visit,
