The Newberry Library’s Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography is pleased to announce its 2019 NEH Summer Seminar for College and University Faculty, “Material Maps in the Digital Age.” The four-week seminar, led by James Akerman (The Newberry Library) and Peter Nekola (Luther College), will focus on the practice of critically reading and teaching from original map documents, informed by the most recent cartographic scholarship.

       The Black Death is widely credited as the most destructive ecological disaster in European history, claiming the lives of an estimated 40 million people in the years 1346-1352 alone. Due to Italy’s position along major Eurasian and Mediterranean trade routes of the period, its urban population suffered an enormous percentage of that toll.
