A graduate student of mine is writing a thesis on conceptions of health of small-town American residents. She is having difficulty finding literature that describes characteristics, such as value systems of such Americans. The literature on rural America and rural health tends not to distinguish between farming and/or frontier communities and small-town dwellers. Can anyone give her some direction to relevant literature? Write to me at

and thanks.

Sounds to me that the project on rural health needs to make contact with the substantial work of economic historians interested in health and welfare in the l9th century-which by definition means rural/small town environments. Big project associated with Fogel, Galenson and others. From memory items to be found in J. Economic History over recent years. Paul B
