 Meet the Editors

Mark Hersey

Mark Hersey is an associate professor of history at Mississippi State University where he directs the Center for the History of Agriculture, Science, and the Environment of the South (CHASES). He is the author of My Work Is That of Conservation: An Environmental Biography of George Washington Carver (2011) as well as numerous articles and book chapters. Since January 2019, he has served, along with his colleague Stephen Brain, as editor of Environmental History. His other editorial work includes a coedited volume honoring Donald Worster and special issues of History of Science and Alabama Review devoted to environmental history. He has served as an editor of H-Rural since 2011.

Drew Swanson is associate professor of history at Wright State University.  A scholar of nature in the American South, he is author of three books, most recently, Beyond the Mountains: Commodifying Appalachian Environments (2018).  His scholarship has garnered awards from the Agricultural History Society, Forest History Society, Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board, Georgia Historical Society, the Ohio Academy of History, and the Southern Historical Association.  He is currently working on a history of Reconstruction in the rural South, as well as a study of the consumer culture of American hunting. He has served as an H-Rural editor since 2013.
