Paul Warde Discussion

Winter conference of the British Agricultural History Society

Saturday 1 December 2018, 10.00-4.30.

Institute for Historical Research, Senate House, Malet St., London WC1

This is a one-day conference addressing tracing and interpreting material life in rural Britain, from tracing possessions and ideas of comfort to the influence of technology and the micro-politics of the family, from  medieval to modern times. Papers will examine new research on the material possessions of late medieval country dwellers; the experience of comfort and well-being in the early modern country house; the distribution of food and goods in the Victorian household; and the impact of electrification in the twentieth-century countryside. There will also be a roundtable on current approaches and new possibilities in studying  material life in rural society.

Speakers are Chris Briggs (University of Cambridge), Jon Stobart (Manchester Metropolitan University), Emma Griffin (University of East Anglia), and Vanessa Taylor (University of Greenwich).

The cost of the conference is £30 (with lunch) or £15 (without lunch).  To register and view the full program, go to http://www.bahs.org.uk/events.html . Registration deadline is Friday 23rd November. For queries please contact Paul Warde at psw1000@cam.ac.uk
