A colleague and I are hoping to develop a panel for the 2018 Policy History Conference, which will be held in Tempe from May 16-19. We are broadly interested in papers concerning the public policy foundations of food systems/commodity chains. My own work examines the USDA’s tobacco research during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. My colleague Chris Deutsch studies the political economy of beef during the twentieth century. Our work is situated in a modern US context and builds upon historiographies of capitalism and the state, but we could be interested in papers situated in different historiographical, temporal or geographical contexts.
