The Politics of the Countryside, from the Fourteenth to the Twentieth Century

Winter conference of the British Agricultural History Society

This is a one-day conference addressing political actors and actions in the countryside from medieval to modern times in Britain. Papers will examine disputes over commons in late medieval England; the politics of improvement and anti-improvement in seventeenth-century drainage; the agricultural labourer in the light of nineteenth-century racial politics; and the politics of the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act. There will also be a roundtable on current approaches to categorizing and understanding the history of rural politics.

Speakers are Maïka de Keyser (Utrecht University), Elly Robson (University of Cambridge), Carl Griffin (University of Sussex), Matthew Kelly (Northumbria University, Briony MacDonagh (University of Hull), Calre Griffiths (Cardiff University) and Chris Briggs (University of Cambridge).
