2014 H-Net Commons Migration FAQ

Dear Suscribers,

Please read over this FAQ first for any issues you may be experiencing on the new H-Net Commons platform. If you have an issue that is not addressed, feel free to send the editorial team a message.

Q: What is our new home page?

A: https://networks.h-net.org/h-oralhist

*****

Q: How do I sign up on the new Commons website?

A: During migration, H-Net created an account for you at http://networks.h-net.org/. Your login is the e-mail account you use for H-OralHist. Your password was either generated for you and placed in an e-mail sent on 3/27 during the migration (if this is your first time using the Commons), or it is what you have used before to log in to another Commons network. If this is your first login, you will be asked to create a permanent password for the future. Make sure and write this password down and/or tell your browser to remember it.

Q: How do I post a new discussion?

A: On the home page, simply select from the right-hand sidebar "Create New Discussion Post." You will be taken to a page to enter your discussion in a field similar to a forum thread. After you enter the text, please assign to your discussion adequate categories and tags. These fields suggest subjects as you type in them if you need help. Then click the blue "Preview" button to look over your submission before clicking the blue "Submit to Editor" button to send it along to the editorial team. The editor on duty will review discussion submissions as in the past and will either post it to Commons, send it back to the author for more revisions, or reject it outright. If the submission requires more work or is rejected the author will be notified.

*****

Q: How do I reply to a discussion?

A: If you would like to reply to a discussion, simply navigate to the discussion page (done by clicking the "Read More or Reply" link in discussion e-mails or the "Read More" link on the website) and click "Reply to this Post" on the top of the right-hand sidebar. You will then see editing tools and progress through stages similar to those listed above for posting a new discussion.

*****

Q: How do I set my e-mail notifications?

A: To receive e-mail notifications you need to check your settings in your account menu. This is located up in the top right corner (the icon of a man) under "Notifications." From there you can set how you would like to receive e-mails for each of the networks you are subscribed to.

*****

Q: How do I search the archives?

A: To search the old discussion archive, on the homepage, click the "Discussion Logs" link under "H-OralHist Resources" on the right-hand sidebar. This will send you to the old H-Net site where all previous discussions are archived and searchable. (Note: Once we establish a content presence on the Commons site you will need to search both locations to find legacy data).

*****

Q: Where are the rest of our old resources?

A: The old resource links were moved to a planning network for H-OralHist editors. I am working my way through these and slowly adding them to the "H-OralHist Resources" subheading on the right-hand sidebar of the home page. Once these are all in place, we will begin a general review of each (featuring feedback/submissions from the membership) to update links/entries for 2014.

Sincerely,
Steven Sielaff
