Call for Proposals: 2022 Southern Foodways Alliance Barbecue Oral Histories

The Southern Foodways Alliance seeks oral history collaborators with fresh ideas for the Southern Barbecue Trail. We seek stories that expand our oral history archive of over 70 interviews. We seek collaborators to document the vibrant and evolving barbecue landscape. These oral histories should expand our understanding of barbecue to highlight the diversity of barbecue culture in the South and beyond. Historical themes we are interested in including but are not limited to: 


  • Newcomer/Immigrant Barbecue traditions in the South
  • Great Migration Barbecue traditions 
  • Community Barbecue traditions 
  • Barbecue side dishes 
  • Gender identity and Barbecue 

 To apply for the barbecue oral history project, email a one-to-two page pitch and a portfolio of your previous oral history work to Your pitch should include how your project fits within the Year of Barbecue theme, its geographic location, your project schedule, and a list of possible oral history narrators. 


SFA compensates oral historians for their work and reimburses travel costs. The Deadline to receive pitches is January 31, 2021.
