News and Notes from Oral History in the Mid-Atlantic Region
Note from the President
Hello, Oral Historians of the Mid-Atlantic Region! Hope this note finds you well.
As we came through “summer vacation” and into the new academic school year that dictates so many of our lives, the all-volunteer board of OHMAR was working quietly behind the scenes to strengthen, develop, and grow our organization. This has included recruiting talented and energetic new board members, working on updates to our website, thinking critically about what it means to be a small, volunteer-run professional development organization, and getting ready to tackle our annual conference and a new networking series. We also hosted a workshop for middle and high school educators in partnership with NJ History Day. Many of us recently attended the Oral History Association's Annual Conference, and we’d like to congratulate the organizers on another smoothly-run and stimulating event.

CFP Released!
It’s November, and that means we are releasing the call for paper, panel, and poster proposals for our 2022 Annual Meeting, “Time to Chat? Oral History as Conversation.” The theme encourages both explorations of how people approach oral history, and conversations people are having about oral history. Papers, panels, and posters need not be related to this theme in order to be considered. Submissions on all topics related to the mid-Atlantic region or by oral historians in the mid-Atlantic region are welcome.
The conference will take place Friday, April 29 - Saturday, April 30. After much thoughtful deliberation, we have decided that the conference will be held virtually again for a number of reasons related to the ongoing public health crisis. These include the health and safety of all, but also the financial implications of the pandemic for many.

Now Accepting Applications for the 2022 Martha Ross Prize
Named in honor of our late founding member, OHMAR’s Martha Ross Prize is awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student creating original work in oral history. This award recognizes the achievements of the student and their contributions to the field of oral history. It also provides financial assistance for the student’s current project (i.e., for travel or transcription costs, research, archiving, technology purchases, etc) in the amount of $500. Applications will be accepted from January 8 - March 8, 2022. Recipients will be notified by March 31, 2022. See more here.
Emerging Professionals Lunch and Learn
Networking doesn’t have to require travel, or be expensive! OHMAR is hosting a free, one hour lunch and learn for emerging professionals in the field on Wednesday, November 17 at 12 PM EST. Grab your lunch and log-on to introduce yourself to others, informally share a bit about what you're working on, and solicit advice in a safe and supportive environment.
