Seeking Transcription Volunteers!

Western Neighborhoods Project (WNP) is seeking volunteers to help transcribe oral history recordings. This opportunity is ideal for a relative beginner who wants to expand their resume and learn something new, or an experienced transcriber willing to use their skills to invest in the work of a small nonprofit.

About Us: Western Neighborhoods Project is a 501(c)3 California nonprofit organization, formed in 1999, that preserves and shares the history and culture of the neighborhoods in western San Francisco. In support of this work, the organization launched the OpenSFHistory program to digitize and make accessible online thousands of San Francisco historical images. Now managed by two women under the age of 40, we are not your grandpa’s history organization. In addition to leading history walks and talks, we host a weekly podcast called “Outside Lands San Francisco.” As part of our mission, we conduct oral histories with current and former west-side residents or significant contributors to west side history and culture. Many of these are turned into narrative articles for our quarterly membership magazine. Learn more at our websites: https://outsidelands.org/ and https://opensfhistory.org/

About the volunteer opportunity: Oral histories are actively being recorded and we have a backlog that needs transciption. The work will be performed remotely. We are a small organization with only 2 employees! Staff is here to provide guidance, but we are often juggling many other things. Prospective volunteers should be self-starters, able to manage their own time and do some of their own problem solving. Transciption experience is preferred, but if you are willing to teach yourself the basics of transcription before you get started, we support that to! Above all we want you to enjoy the work and feel good about what you are contributing.

Please email WNP’s Director of Programs, Chelsea Sellin, (that's me!) at chelsea[at]outsidelands.org with a brief statement about your work experience, availability, and why you think you’re a good fit for WNP. Volunteering will start ASAP.
