Igor Golomstock (1939-2017
Igor and I first met about 40 years ago and quickly became friends. I am in debt to him in many ways. Amongst much else, it was he who first encouraged me to translate some of Varlam Shalamov's stories and - a few years later - Vasily Grossman's LIFE AND FATE. Igor’s recent death, in a London hospital, is a great loss.

Post ReplyI have been asked to write another obituary, for Slavic Review. For this I'll be writing less about TOTALITARIAN ART, and more about Igor's life and work as a whole.
