Conference Overview

The Tenth Biennial Conference of the Urban History Association will take place 21-24 October 2021 in Detroit, Michigan. The conference headquarters – the site for most sessions and attendee accommodations – will be at the Westin Book Cadillac Detroit (1114 Washington Boulevard).

The conference is expected to attract upwards of 750 urban historians, planners, writers, scholars, and journalists. They will participate in approximately 100 panels, plenaries, roundtables, and tours during the four-day event. The conference theme is “Contested Cities,” which reflects the growing interdisciplinarity of the field of urban studies and focus on cities, suburbs, and metropolitan areas as places of constant struggle, persistent remaking, and endless public and private battles.
