The History of the Family is soliciting special issue proposals on timely and understudied topics within family history and historical demography. By doing so, we hope to offer early- and mid-career scholars in particular the opportunity to showcase their research line, while at the same time play an important role in innovating the field.
We are open to proposals focusing on both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and have no chronological limitations. In particular we encourage articles on research across various cultures and societies in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific Rim, in addition to Europe, the United States and Canada. While firmly rooted in history, the journal is interdisciplinary; its contributions can focus on demography, sociology, economy and health as they relate to historical developments in family and the life course. ‘Family history’ should therefore be understood in a broad sense.
Next to original research articles, research notes – which include position papers, methodological reports, replication studies, descriptions of databases and other source materials – can also be part of special issues. Apart from an introduction, we also welcome review articles by specialists invited to comment on the special issue.
In general special issues contain between 6-10 contributions, although special sections of 3-5 articles are also possible. Recent examples of special issues published in The History of the Family are: ‘Stepfamilies across Europe and overseas, 1550-1900’, ‘Finance and the Family Life Cycle’, ‘Animals in the Family’, ‘Urban Sanitation and the Decline of Mortality’, ‘Reproductive Politics and Sex Education in Cold War Europe’ and ‘Romantic Relationships Across Boundaries’.
