St. Lawrence University invites applications for a two-year ASIANetwork-Luce Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship in Asian Studies with a focus on public health within Southeast and/or Northeast Asia to begin August 15, 2021. This will be a joint appointment in the Asian Studies Program and Public Health Program. Specific areas of scholarly focus are open, but could include maternal-child health, tropical or emerging infectious diseases or environmental health. We are particularly interested in candidates who have good primary field experience in Asia, who take a comparative approach to teaching about public health in the region, and whose scholarly work and teaching integrate an inquiry into Asia’s diverse cultural, political, socio-economic, and ecological systems.

The successful candidate will teach three courses per year in their area of expertise, all geared to a broad undergraduate audience consisting of majors and non-majors, attend departmental and faculty meetings, keep office hours, and mentor students. We seek a candidate who will enrich the university’s Asian Studies and Public Health programs through teaching and interacting with students, collaborating with faculty, enhancing the curriculum, and participating in the intellectual and cultural life of the university. The Fellow will consult with and advise the Asian Studies and Public Health programs and individual faculty for the purposes of creating new research opportunities for students, helping Asian Studies and Public Health faculty incorporate new elements into their courses and/or develop new courses, working with the Director of Asia Programs to cultivate connections between SLU and E/SE Asia (study abroad, curriculum development, and internship), and organizing, leading, and attending cultural events focused on E/SE Asia on campus. The Fellow will organize a faculty reading group that will meet throughout the academic year; will work with program faculty to offer a series of guest lectures/discussions in their classes; and will offer public presentations, lectures, and/or other events open to the campus on the topic of the Fellow’s research or other subjects related to Asian Studies and Public Health.
