Dartmouth College is pleased to host the 2019 annual meeting of the New England Conference of the Association for Asian Studies on November 1-2.

One theme of this year’s conference is food and beverage in Asia. On the evening of Friday, November 1, our opening events will include a display of food-related Asian artifacts in Dartmouth’s renovated Hood Museum of Art. In addition, that evening Merry White of Boston University will deliver the keynote address titled “Why the Fishhead Faces Left and Other Tales: Learning from Food Workers in Japan.” Furthermore, three of the sixteen panels on Saturday, November 2, will deal with food-related topics across Asia.

Also, one of the last panels on Saturday will feature the documentary film “Paper Lanterns,” presented by the director and the producer. The film centers on the twelve U.S. POWs who perished in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the Japanese man who has devoted much of his life to commemorating them.
