Federal History 2.0:  Rethinking Methods and Approaches in the Wake of a Pandemic

The past few years represent a true sea change for federal historians, archivists, curators, and preservationists.. The aftermath of the COVID-19 epidemic dramatically altered how and where those engaged in federal history conduct their work. It required federal history professionals to come up with new and innovative ways to continue conducting research, producing histories, and doing all other aspects of their jobs. This year’s SHFG conference will explore this transformation within federal history offices, libraries, archives, and museums. The program committee is seeking panels and individual paper submissions with focus on these challenges and innovations.

The Society encourages papers on the following subjects:

Digital history/humanities

Digital preservation and presentation of records

NARA/OMB’s directive to agencies to manage all permanent records in electronic format by June 30, 2024

Presidential libraries and records

Accessibility of records

Web-based projects

New approaches to the museum experience

History-oriented social media campaigns

History and technology

Oral history

The conference will be held at the National Archives and Records Administration, Washington D.C., June 1-2, 2023.

Submission Process

The Program Committee invites proposals for full panels and roundtables, as well as for individual papers. The committee will consider proposals for entire panels and roundtables before reviewing individual papers.

Panel and roundtable proposals should include a panel title and session abstract (200-300 words), brief abstracts for each presentation (200-300 words), and biographical paragraphs and contact information for each participant. Individual paper proposals should include a brief abstract (200-300 words), a brief biographical paragraph for the presenter, and contact information.

All proposals should be submitted using this Google Form.
