NCIS Guide for Independent Scholars

A book edited by Amanda Haste, Linda Baines, and Helen Ross

(National Coalition of Independent Scholars)

 

Objective of the Book

The purpose of the Guide is to provide resources and supportive materials for Independent Scholars (IS) in a wide variety of fields. The tone will be supportive, positive and informative, with a focus on providing solutions to the issues faced by ISs. The Guide will consist of articles on various aspects of independent scholarship, and practical resources to support ISs in their journey. The first part of the Guide will concern the whys and wherefores of being/becoming an IS, while the second part will provide the tools to carry out independent research in an ethical and rigorous way, and to develop strategies for presenting ourselves to the world.

Target Audience

This book’s target audience will be current and potential ISs. The Guide will be published online in PDF format on the NCIS website, and will be free to access and download.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Finding Freedom Outside Academia 
  • Ensuring the Rigor of your Research
  • Ethics in Research
  • Technical Writing/Effective communication
  • Conducting Interdisciplinary Research
  • Public Scholarship 
  • Creating your Research Identity
  • Playing the Game: Strategic Scholarship
  • Funding your Research
  • Self-Care for Independent Scholars

 

Submission Procedure

Scholars are invited to submit on or before February 14, 2023, a chapter proposal of 500-750 words clearly explaining the mission and concerns of their proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by February 28, 2023, about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Complete chapters are expected to be submitted by May 30, 2023. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication.

All proposals should be submitted directly to the editors at info@ncis.org, subject line “IS Guide” chapter submission.

 Publisher

The book will be published by the National Coalition of Independent Scholars as an Open Access PDF file. It will be registered with an NCIS ISBN, under a Creative Commons licence, free to read and download.

 

Important Dates

February 14, 2023: Proposal Submission Deadline

February 28, 2023: Notification of Acceptance

May 30, 2023: Full Chapter Submission

September 30, 2023: Review Results Returned

December 1, 2023: Final Acceptance Notification

December 30, 2023: Publication
