Spain was no stranger to the polarization and agitations of the interwar decades. A coup d’état in 1936 unleashed a brutal civil war involving different political, social, cultural, and economic projects. The conflagration, which was not only fought out on the battlefield but also on the home front, represented an unprecedented trauma that shaped Spanish history. The main consequence of the war was the establishment of a dictatorship that ruled the country for almost forty years and whose nature, textures, and transformations are still the subject of controversy. The war, its immediate aftermath, and the Francoist regime are the themes of this conference, which aims to elicit debate about the heterogeneity of civil wars, the post-war experience, or the fascist and authoritarian systems of the twentieth century. This conference hopes to appeal to scholarly communities that assess the Spanish case through comparative, transnational and interdisciplinary perspective. Therefore, we encourage interdisciplinary, comparative, and transnational perspectives.
The international conference Traumatic Spain: War, Dictatorship, Resistances, 1936-1975 will take place on June 1-2 at the New University of Lisbon. It will include three keynote addresses by scholars of international renown (Mercedes Yusta, Gutmaro Gómez, José Luis Villacañas). Additionally, the conference will also include several relevant papers selected through an open call, regardless of their disciplinary tack. These presentations will last no more than 25 minutes and can be delivered in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. The deadline for paper proposals is February 28, 2023. They should be sent to the address: congresso2023lisboa@gmail.com They will be presented in a single Word file that should include authorship, institutional affiliation, title of the proposal, an abstract of under 300 words, a short biography of under 200 words, and contact details (email and telephone number). The selection of the abstracts will seek to guarantee quality, originality and diversity in the contributions.
