The Department of History at Texas Christian University welcomes applications to our graduate program in Latin American history, for doctoral studies beginning in Fall 2023.
TCU’s program in Latin American history follows a rich tradition of rigorous academic training that dates to the early 1960s. Our program includes four permanent faculty specializing in Latin American and Caribbean history. We cover a broad geographic range in both colonial and modern periods, including New Spain and the early modern Atlantic world; modern Central America; modern Mexico and US-Latin American relations; and colonial and modern Cuba and the Caribbean. Graduate students in Latin American history are uniquely situated to pursue interdisciplinary certificates in Women’s and Gender Studies, and Comparative Race & Ethnic Studies.
The Department of History admits only a small number of applicants in order to provide full funding and close mentorship at each stage of advanced study. Admitted students receive a generous five-year funding package (tuition and stipend), heavily subsidized health insurance, office space, and resources for research and conference travel, including endowed funds earmarked for history grad students, in addition to college and university funding sources. Additional academic support is available through the Graduate Writing Center, thesis and dissertation bootcamps, writing groups, and graduate student senate. Professionalization opportunities include learning Spanish paleography using TCU’s new Colonial Spanish America Collection, trips with faculty to Latin American and US archives, teaching instructorships and robust opportunities for pedagogical development through the Koehler Center, apprenticeships in journal editing and publishing, development and implementation of public programing and educational initiatives, workshops on alt-ac careers, and more. Our graduates consistently gain meaningful employment upon graduation.
Applicants must have a B.A. or M.A. in history, anthropology, art history, or a related field, as well as intermediate to advanced Spanish language skills. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, traditions, and academic trajectories. International candidates and candidates from historically underrepresented communities are encouraged to apply.
