The Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention (I-GMAP) at Binghamton University, the State University of New York, invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention.
This is a fixed-term position with an initial appointment for the 2023-2024 academic year, and is renewable for a second year (2024-2025), pending satisfactory performance evaluations, and with the possibility of a third year (2025-26) depending on continuing performance and need.
The position will receive a faculty berth in an academic department appropriate for the successful applicant's terminal degree.
The three-fold mission of I-GMAP is: 1) to bridge the gap between scholars conducting academic research on the causes, risks, and mechanisms for reducing the occurrence of atrocity crimes and the global community of prevention practitioners in both state and non-state roles; 2) to break down barriers that prevent academic disciplines from working together effectively; and 3) to bring all the resources of a modern research university to bear to advance atrocity prevention. The Institute offers a full range of research, policy analysis, advocacy, convening, and academic programs, including the Master of Science, the Graduate Certificate, and the Undergraduate Minor in Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention.
The visiting position normally carries a teaching load of either four or five courses per academic year, as determined by the Co-Directors. Teaching will be in direct support of I-GMAP's academic programs, including at least two of the core courses for the Master of Science in GMAP: Comparative Genocides, and Micro-Dynamics of Mass Atrocities. Other courses may be graduate and/or advanced undergraduate courses to serve as electives for the MS in GMAP.
I-GMAP welcomes qualified applicants holding a doctorate from any academic discipline, provided that the applicant is able to document a substantive connection to genocide and mass atrocity prevention, broadly conceived. While not required, documentation of substantial experience of collaborative work with non-academic partners (such as consulting, policy analysis, work with non-governmental organizations) is highly desirable.
The Visiting Professor of Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention is invited to participate in the full range of I-GMAP activities, including interactions with resident and visiting practitioners and faculty fellows, and I-GMAP's annual Frontiers ofPrevention forum.
The position carries competitive package of salary and benefits, and includes a stipend in support of research, including research-related travel.
PhD in hand by time of appointment, documented teaching experience in areas directly relevant for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention, documentation of teaching success.

- A sample syllabus for either (a) Comparative Genocides, which uses a comparative lens to introduce students to a variety of historic and/or contemporary cases of genocide and other mass atrocities, or (b) Micro-Dynamics of Mass Atrocity, which explores the social, cultural, ideological, and interpersonal aspects that play a role in the commission of mass atrocities.
- A Research Statement (no longer than two pages).
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness.
- No fewer than three (3) academic references, at least one of which can comment on teaching qualifications and experience.
