CALL for PAPERS for "The Turbulent Twenties: A Centennial Exploration of America in a Changing World," a conference at CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, sponsored by CSUB's Public History Institute, the Walter W. Stiern Library, and its Historical Research Center.

Abstracts of roughly 200 words, along withg a one-page c.v., should be emailed to Prof. Miriam Raub Vivian at mvivian@csub.edu by MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2022. Full paper submissions will be due to panel chairs via email by Monday, Oct. 24.

We invite proposals for either 3-paper panels or an individual 20-min. research presentation from established and emerging scholars, as well as graduate and advanced undergraduate students. The proposals may come from diverse disciplines, as well as those that take an interdisciplinary perspective. We plan to publish selected conference papers digitially. Papers on any topic about 1920s America will be considered; the following may be of particular interest:

women's suffrage; prohibition; motor vehicles; aviation; the KKK; agriculture; oil, the Red Scare; art and music; immigration; labor; and foreign policy, among others.

The conference will include a keynote address by CSUB musicologist Dr. Joel Haney on Bakersfield opera legend Lawrence Tibbett: "'A Genuine Son of the West': The Voices of Opera Singer Lawrence Tibbett."

There is no fee for the conference, but you must register by Friday, Oct. 7 at http://phi.csub.edu. There will be a light breakfast, and you are invited to reserve a place for a no-host prix fixe lunch at Wool Grower's Basque Restaurant following the half-day conference (c. 1:15pm) by indicating your intent on the registration form. Lunch is about $30, plus tip, to be paid individually at the restaurant.
