**Workshop 1** 

Date: October 7, 2020 (Wednesday)

Virtual Workshop: Project-Based Learning and Research with National History Day

Presenters:

Dr. Richard Demirjian, Assistant Teaching Professor, Rutgers-Camden History Department

Dr. Joan Ruddiman, Retired Outstanding NJ History Day Teacher

Audience: Middle and High School Teachers and Students

Description: Learn more about how to get started with NHD. Explore the 2021 theme "Communication in History" and possible related NJ topics. Discuss strategies for empowering student voice in choosing a topic and steps to take to research that topic online and offline. Learn about research in archives and museums and the value of going beyond Google to find unique and relevant sources to thoughtfully incorporate into NHD projects.

Date: Thursday, October 29

Time: 8am -12pm

Virtual Workshop: National History Day Overview and Oral History in the Classroom

Presenters:

Barbara Gallo, Retired Outstanding NJ History Day Teacher

Professor Melissa Ziobro, the Monmouth University NJ National History Day Coordinator and President, Oral History in the Mid-Atlantic Region

Audience: Middle and High School Teachers 

Description: Learn more about how to get started with NHD. Explore the 2021 theme "Communication in History" and possible related NJ topics. Discuss strategies for empowering student voice in choosing a topic and steps to take to research that topic online and offline. Learn how to access and use existing oral history collections, and empower your students to conduct meaningful interviews themselves in-person and virtually in the age of COVID-19.

**4 professional development credits will be offered via William Paterson University.**
