Research - What is (a) Jockey Hollow?

Brooks Betz Discussion

Always crowdsourcing, and a big fan of the scholars in this group and their knowledge. After the launch of the 90th anniversary of the National Park Service's Morristown National Historical Park, I was amazed to hear that there is no clear understanding of the origins and name "Jockey Hollow."

I've crowdsourced the question to the internet via a story https://www.mrlocalhistory.org/what-is-a-jockey-hollow/

Would love to hear from this group as well. If not the exact meaning of the name "Jockey Hollow", does anyone have any thoughts or reference to a thought of what Jockey Hollow or "a jockey hollow" might reference?

I find it amazing the truth can't be found in today's digital age.

Not a direct answer, but a couple of stories behind the name for places in PA and NY with the same appelation, from 19th century workks digitized in Google Books. I was hoping to find something there from one of the old County History books. Maybe I can get to the hard copies a little later.

Pennsylvania: https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Old_Pike/Lc4xAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=%22Jockey%20Hollow%22

New York: https://www.google.com/books/edition/An_Outline_History_of_Orange_County/ivopAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=%22Jockey%20Hollow%22%20%22New%20Jersey%22

I do note that in no NJ sources it is always "Jockey Hollow Road" - rather than a place called ":Jockey Hollow." It would seem thatthe former implies the existence of the latter, but we should also entertain the possibilty that this is not the case.

Cheers,

John
