Deadline April 15: ASMEA Research and Travel Grant Opportunities

The Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA) is pleased to offer Research and Travel Grant opportunities in conjunction with its Eleventh Annual Conference being held November 1 - 2, 2018 in Washington D.C.

The Research Grant Program is designed to stimulate new and diverse lines of discourse on topics that deserve greater attention within the regions of the Middle East and Africa. Grants of up to $2500 will be awarded.

Topics to be covered but are not limited to:

Governance and Economy

  • Maintaining power- elections, patronage, coercion
  • Political and economic reform movements
  • Economy and state corruption
  • Dealing with bounty: oil, gas and other resourcesIranian current political affairs
  • Traditional approaches to domestic rule and empire in Iran

The Travel Grant Program is primarily for interested Ph.D. students, post-Docs, and junior faculty studying the Middle East or Africa. Grants of up to $750 will be awarded. This year's program is divided into two types of travel grants: the first is for scholars of the Middle East and the second is intended for scholars of Africa focused on the world of Islam, Islamism, and related issues in the continent.
