Is "History of Journalism" a Required Course for undergraduate Journalism students?

Dear fellow JHistory members:

My university, Montclair State University (NJ), is going to transfer the Journalism Minor from the English Department to the new School of Communication and Media (SCM).

Our J-Minor program has always centered on print, especially newspaper, journalism. The SCM concentrates on digital and electronic media, of which news is only a part and of which newspaper journalism has not been a part.

Reporting Revolutions: What the papers said

Books on rise and decline of Black and Left newspapers in USA?

Dear fellow listmembers:

I teach a History of Journalism in America class for undergraduate Journalism minors.

I'd like to include one class, with either one or, at most, two articles or chapters of a book, on the rise and decline of the Black Press.

I'd also like to do a class on the rise and decline of the left press.

My hypothesis is that lack of major advertising is the main reason for both declines. But I need some good readings.

So, I'd like to ask the learned members of this list for two things:
