More than a decade ago Lars Elleström published his influential article “The Modalities of Media: A Model for Understanding Intermedial Relations” in his edited work Media Borders, Multimodality and Intermediality (2010). A couple of years later John Bateman and Karl-Heinrich Schmidt published their fundamental work on Multimodal Film Analysis: How Films Mean (2012).

Radhakrishnan has asked in an essay that spells out the asymmetries implicit in many acts of comparison which have come into view from the critical perspective of postcolonial theory.
