One Day Symposium

Contemporary LGBTQ+ Screen Cultures

Thursday 25th May 2023.

The ‘Screen Studies Research Network’ at Manchester Metropolitan University invites proposals for 20 minute papers to be given at ‘Contemporary LGBTQ+ Screen Cultures’, a one-day, ‘in person’ Symposium to be held in Manchester on Thursday 25th May 2023.

The Symposium aims to facilitate discussion of contemporary issues around LGBTQ+ screen cultureswith a focus on 21st century representations and expressions of queerness in film and other screen media. The symposium will conclude with a round-table discussion with media practitioners and queer performers, and we hope this will be followed by a public screening event in the evening.

We are particularly keen to encourage papers that address any of the following, though proposals need not be limited to these themes:

o    Bisexuality

o    Contemporary Trans cultures

o    21st Century Camp & identity Politics

o    Intersections of race, disability and sexuality

o    21st Century Queer communities

o    Queer digital cultures

o    Queer Spaces and Locations

We anticipate that a proposal for a Special Issue of a journal will emerge from the Symposium.

Abstracts should be 250 words and should also include a short bio. The deadline for abstracts is 1stMarch 2023.  Notifications will be made by 15th  March 2023. We are particularly keen to welcome PhD and ECR scholars and some contributory travel bursaries for unsalaried speakers are therefore available. Please indicate in your email if you would like to be considered for a bursary and indicate what your travel expenses will be.

Please email abstracts to: Andrew Moor A.Moor@mmu.ac.uk and Samantha Colling s.colling@mmu.ac.uk
