Hello all,
I am a graduate student at Kendall College of Art and Design and have been researching imagery in Cosmopolitian magazine, particularly their fitness articles, in the 1980s. I was wondering if any of you have had to get the rights to magazines for reproduction in just scholary or academic work. Hearst has been almost impossible to get ahold of, and I was wondering if any of you have dealt with this before. My professor and I did come across an article that discusses fair use, as well, which was making the argument that if you photograph a copy of something that you own, that you should be able to use it in scholarly articles or papers without necessarily buying the rights from the company per say.
