2022 SMH Panel

Greetings, My name is Eric Paul Totten, I am an Instructor at the University of Arkansas. I wanted to propose putting together a panel for the Society of Military History 2022 Conference. My initial thought is that the panel would focus on military occupation or other operations during the American Civil War in the Federal Department of the South. The panel could discuss topics such as: civil-military relations between belligerents and non-combatants, race relations between southern African Americans and U.S. armed service members, northern politics on the home front and its effect on U.S. regiments engaged in occupation duty, environmental impacts on occupation, and benevolent organizations and their efforts in the occupied South. Ideally, the panel would focus geographically on the Federal Department of the South, a zone of military operations ranging from the coast of South Carolina to Key West, Florida. However, the panel could adopt a larger geographical focus if necessary. If you are interested, please email me at eptotten@uark.edu. Thank you for your time.
