War of 1812 -Powder Magazine

Michael D Coker Discussion

Greetings all,

I'm part of a group of grad students working on a public history project recreating a model of the Newport Barracks, KY as it appeared during War of 1812 period.  Currently, we're looking at the powder magazine structure, which has been described as  "beehive" in appearance.  Can anyone tell me if there are any military manuals/regulations that would govern the construction of such a structure during this period?

Thanks for reading!

Michael,

Have you tried the National Archives Record Administration (NARA) at National Archives I in DC, one of the War Department "Old Army" record groups (RG 107 (?)) for the period? Many of the masonry forts in use during the War of 1812 dated from construction in the 1790s.
