Enslaved.org NEH Summer Institute For Higher Education Faculty and Advanced Graduate Students

Michigan State University will be hosting an interdisciplinary National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute titled Data-Informed Methods in Slavery Studies from June 18 to July 14, 2023. This interdisciplinary NEH Institute will explore the opportunities and challenges of engaging in data-informed humanistic research and public scholarship as it applies to the study of enslaved people of African descent. The institute organizers are researchers on Enslaved.Org. Aimed at higher education faculty, instructional staff, and graduate students, the institute is structured in two-parts: a two-week on-site focusing on the state of the field, recommended practices, and hands-on methods for dataset creation; then two-week virtual component during which participants work on a historical dataset, with continued presentations from experts, support from institute staff and peers, and an opportunity to share preliminary findings. Participants will receive stipends that should cover the costs of travel and room and board in East Lansing. Application information and a complete description of the institute are on the institute’s website. The application deadline is March 1, 2023. Applications from adjacent fields are welcomed. The project's ethics statement can be found here.

Enslaved.org Summer Research Opportunity Program For Undergraduate Students

The third iteration of the Enslaved.org Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) will be hosted at the University of Maryland and the University of California, Riverside. The 2023 cohort will participate in a seven-week (June 5-July 21, 2023) residential research experience, working closely with project partners to learn methods for data-informed historical research, develop a dataset to be published in the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation related to history of enslavement and the recovery of enslaved lives in State of Maryland, and share their findings with academic and public audiences. Participants will receive a stipend. Accommodations and travel to and between research sites in Maryland/DC/Virginia are covered by the program, as well as transportation and accommodations for the culminating Scholars Institute, to be held at the UCR Palm Desert Center (Palm Desert, CA), the week of July 17-21.  In addition to submitting a formal application at btaa.org/resources-for/students/srop/how-to-apply, please email kepoznan@umd.edu indicating your interest in the Enslaved.org program specifically. Review criteria will include an expression of interest in public humanities. The program offers readiness mentoring for graduate studies. The BTAA application deadline for best consideration is February 10, 2023 but applications can be accepted by email until March 1.
