Call for Papers to a Special Issue to be published in 2021 for the journal TRaNS: Trans-Regional and -National Studies of Southeast Asia Theme: Nation-building in the Postwar Period: Modern Art and Architecture in Southeast Asia and Beyond Special editors: Sarena Abdullah, PhD., Universiti Sains Malaysia, MALAYSIA. Suzie Kim, PhD., University of Mary Washington, USA. The growth of Southeast Asian nationalism might have a different underlying cause in every country but in general, the end of Cold War and the waves of liberalization and democratization in Southeast Asia had brought significant changes in political consciousness of the countries in the region. The widening discourse of architecture and the production of material and visual culture through an exploration of multiple modernities in Southeast Asia posits that these constructs are intertwined and linked to postcolonial constructions of identities. These have resulted to the nation building and state building mechanisms of these countries. This special issue of TRaNS journal seeks for papers that examine the context of post-war, nation-building ideology, and the espoused modernity that reflected in the establishment of architecture (or the larger extend of urban sites and cites) and/or production of modern art, including modern art infrastructure and support. The issue will include articles on trans-national, trans-regional and comparative perspectives of this context in Southeast Asia. It is not limited to comparative case of countries within Southeast Asia but welcomes a larger discourse in which the analysis could include neighbouring countries and/or regions. We welcome articles centered (but not exclusively) on the following themes: 1. Theoretical foundations of postcolonial art and architecture in Southeast Asia 2. Art and Architecture related to nation building and state building mechanisms of countries in Southeast Asia 3. Transnational case studies comparing art and architecture in Southeast Asia with neighbouring countries after Cold War We welcome online submissions by clicking the following: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/trans The deadline of submission is April 30, 2020.
