Dear Colleagues,

As part of our online lecture series “Intersectional Perspectives on Turkey,” we will be hosting Dr. Banu Karaca (Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin) on 20 May 2021, Thursday at 18:00-19:30 (CET).

Dr. Banu Karaca will present her new book “The National Frame: Art and State Violence in Turkey and Germany where she explores the art settings and actors of two cities: Istanbul and Berlin. The book is an ethnographic investigation of how artists navigate the art world, the dependencies and power differentials it creates and reproduces, their relationship to cultural policies, and how arts patrons and sponsors see their role in society. It tells the often-unsettling stories of the monies that sustain the art world: More often than not, art capital is rooted in histories of state violence and dispossession.

The book launch will be held on Zoom. To join, please click on the following link:

Following, the last event of the lecture series will be another book launch. On June 10, 2021, Dr. Gülay Türkmen (University of Graz) will present her book “Under the Banner of Islam? Turks, Kurds and the Limits of Religious Unity.” More information will follow in due time.

The lecture series is organized by Prof. Dr. Bilgin Ayata (, Dr. des. Derya Özkaya ( and M.Sc. Sophie Mainz (
