Two Doctoral Fellowships ERC at the University of Neuchâtel (deadline: 22 April)

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Neuchâtel is recruiting two doctoral students for the ERC Project titled “Towards a Decentred History of the Middle East: Transborder Spaces, Circulations, ‘Frontier Effects’ and State Formation, 1920-1946(BORDER) funded by the European Research Council and led by Professor Jordi Tejel. Candidates must hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in contemporary history, sociology, ethnology or Middle East Studies, and has a strong interest in the topics of borders, trans-border circulations, refugees, and the Middle East. The position starts on 1st September 2018 or upon agreement. Tasks vary from academic and administrative assistance to production of collective papers, complete conference papers, and production of a thesis.

1) Doctoral Fellowship at 70% in contemporary history for 4 years

The candidate will join a research team of three and complement the existing research strengths by working on the history of Iraq in the interwar era.

Requirements: capacity to work collectively; very good command of Arabic (reading) and English. Knowledge of French and German is advantageous. Skills in quantitative methods are an additional asset.

What we offer: The chosen candidate will be recruited to work at 70% for a total of four years. Salaries are according to University’s salary scale

2) Doctoral Fellowship at 50% in contemporary history for 3 years

The candidate will join a research team of three and complement the existing research strengths by working on the history of the modern Middle East.

Requirements: capacity to work collectively; very good command of German, and French or English. Knowledge of a Middle Eastern language is advantageous. Skills in quantitative methods are an additional asset.

What we offer: The chosen candidate will be recruited to work at 50% for a total of three years. Salaries are according to University’s salary scale
