Matthew Head, Sovereign Feminine. Music and Gender in Eighteenth-Century Germany.

Berkeley: University of California Press, 2013.

An exemplary series of case studies combining cultural-historical, musical and literary analyses in order to recover generally little-known women performers and composers and, more importantly, to restore the historical moment and ideals that enabled and conditioned their activities and reception. Head thus contributes not only to music history but to larger understandings of the "indexical' relationship between femininity and modernity in important strands of enlightenment thought.
